Why it matters
AI answers with web search rely on the Google and Bing indexes. A home page marked noindex (often left over from when the site was under construction, or the WordPress "Discourage search engines from indexing this site" option left on) does not enter those indexes. And a canonical pointing to another domain tells the search engine that the real page lives there, and that page gets the credit.
