x402 (HTTP payment)

Why it matters

x402 reuses the HTTP 402 status code (Payment Required), which has been in the standard forever but never really used, to let an agent pay for a resource or API automatically, with no human intervention in the middle of the transaction. It is the most direct protocol for agentic commerce: request the resource, get a 402 with the price, pay, receive the resource. One detail that cannot be ignored: this is real money moving with no human in the loop. A production implementation needs spending limits, idempotency (to avoid double charging) and some fraud check before accepting truly autonomous payment.
